The series focuses on Queen Elizabeth II, then 25 years old and faced with the daunting task of leading the world’s most famous monarchy while building relationships with legendary premier Sir Winston Churchill. The British Empire is in decline, the political world in disarray. A young woman is then ascending the throne at the dawn of a new era.
The idea of making a series on the Queen of England certainly raised more than one eyebrow at Netflix, Queen Elizabeth II feeling more naphthalene and the dusty corridors of Buckingham Palace than blood and powder. Modernizing this stubborn stiffness icon, the very image of the Windsor family of yesteryear (long before the Diana, Harry and others Kate came to put a little life in a family that was a little too Museum) had everything of the challenge impossible, at least that’s what we thought.
